LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS.
Join us for the first St John Choir Schola Tenebrae on March 31 st at 7:30pm at
www.sjcschola.ca! Live-streamed from Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Wednesday March 31,
2021 at 7:30pm, this candlelit SJCS Tenebrae service weaves the salvation narrative through crucial moments in the Old Testament to the betrayal and Passion of Christ. Together with the beautifully stirring music of the SJCS choirs, the short readings draw us deeply into the mystery and mercy of our redemption. Marked by solemnity and stillness, the SJCS Tenebrae retains many of the traditional elements dating back to the 9 th century: the gradual extinguishing of candles (representing the abandonment of Christ by his disciples) and the gathering dusk; the last candle, the Christ candle, being ‘entombed’ by being removed from sight, leaving the church in dark silence; and then an abrupt noise called the strepitus, intended to evoke the earthquake at the moment of Christ's death. Into that stillness, when darkness appears to have overcome the Light, the Christ candle returns. Christ the Redeemer has trampled down death by death. All depart in silence. Please consider supporting our program with your prayers and financial help. |
